MAC Makeup: Developed for Professionals, Loved By All

MAC makeup (originally known as Makeup Artist Cosmetics) is a Canadian cosmetics brand developed by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo. The Toronto-based duo originally created this line for professional makeup artists who worked in television, film, theatre and fashion, and began promoting the product by giving free samples to prominent makeup artists in these industries. The quality and effectiveness of the products quickly became a favorite and in 1991 the first store opened in New York City.

Mac Makeup is known for its innovative formulas, extensive color palette, professional results and of course the company's dedication to social causes. After creating the very successful MAC AIDS fund, the VIVA Glam line was launched where every penny of the profits from a select line of lipsticks and glosses are donated to back to the charity. MAC makeup is also heralded for its 100% cruelty-free ingredients, as well as their recycling program where customers can return used bottles for a free lipstick or eye shadow.

MAC relies on little advertising compared to its competitors like L'Oreal, Cover Girl and Maybelline, yet the brand now has a cult-like following who swear by their products. So what are MAC Makeup products really like? Here is a review of some of MAC's most famous products.
MAC Lipstick

MAC's lipstick range has to be one of the most extensive on the market. Customers can choose by color or shade (frost, crèmesheen, dazzle, amplified, etc.) to find the perfect lipstick. The heaviness and texture does vary by finish, but for an all-around lightweight yet creamy finish, go for the cremesheen or luster finish. Your lips feel moisturized but you don't experience a waxy, heavy feel that most lipsticks have. Another bonus of MAC lipsticks is they don't have a horrible taste like some on the market who use cheap and/or animal based products, which give that oily feeling and taste.
MAC Lipglass

Lipglass is a fitting name for this gloss because its high sheen actually makes the lips look like they are made of glass or ice—perfect for "notice me" lips. When the brand launched, Lipglass was only available in clear, but now the collection has expanded to include a multitude of shades and finishes. Clear Lipglass can be layered on heavy or thick, so you can control the amount of sheen. It's also great for mixing with powder pigments and used as a lipstick. The only downside to the classic Lipglass is that it is super-sticky and after a long day if you have worn it over lipstick you may notice that you have ‘bleeding' of the color around the lip line (so it's best to wear it on its own). However, the Cremesheen Glass is creamy and non-sticky with some interesting shades, including ice blue.
MAC Studio Tech Foundation

MAC makeup has a whole range of foundations including the essential mineral-based line, but one of their classic foundations- Studio Tech- is still a bestseller and a great option if you want better coverage than a mineral makeup but all of the gentleness. Studio Tech goes on with a sponge applicator (provided) like a light cream, but once on your skin transforms into a silky light powdery finish that has amazing coverage. The only downside to this foundation is that it provides a very matte finish, which is great for people with oily skin but not ideal for those who like to have a natural sheen.

MAC Studio Fix Lash

MAC has launched several mascaras all with their own unique benefits, but the Studio Fix Lash is considered a modern day classic. It has a mousse-like formula that adds dramatic length and volume, and it also makes lashes appear denser as it fills in sparse areas. It is non-clumping and doesn't run or flake off throughout the day. Considering that cheaper supermarket brands are now an average of $10-$12, paying $14 for a truly professional product is a steal!
